We encourage you to make your hats using natural materials if possible. Wool, cotton, alpaca, silk, linen, mohair, angora, and other natural fibers are kinder to our environment than their synthetic cousins, as their production requires fewer harsh chemicals and they will eventually decompose.

 

Additionally, try sourcing your yarn from a local farm, mill, and/or dyer

to reduce the carbon footprint of your hat.

The Classic Pattern

This is the original Treetop hat design. Knit in the round with a band of ribbing at the base, this version of the pattern is simple and straightforward for most knitters to follow. It also lends itself to experimentation, for knitters who want to try a different stitch pattern or design element.

Yarn weight: worsted

Needles: 16" circular in 7 US/4.5 mm & 8 US/5 mm

                double-pointed in 8 US/5 mm

Level: intermediate/advanced beginner

Skills: knit, purl, knit in the round, knit front and back increase, knit 2 together decrease, double-pointed needles

The Flat-Out Simple Pattern

This version is perfect for the absolute beginner knitter. It is knit flat in garter stitch and sewn up the side to achieve the conical Treetop shape. It doesn't get easier than this!

Yarn weight: chunky

Needles: straight size 10 US/6 mm

Level: beginner

Skills: knit, knit 2 together decrease, seaming

The Chunky Classic Pattern

Not a knitter? No problem. If crochet is your craft of choice, you can make Treetop hats with this pattern.
